Highway 101 Reopened From Rockslide
Highway 101 through the Lake Crescent of Olympic National Park reopened at 6pm, Thursday, October 18. The road closed at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday following a rock
slide at Milepost 228. The rock slide occurred while construction crews were working on a rock bolting and scaling project on the cliff face next to the road. Two men sustained minor injuries and an excavator was damaged by the falling rocks. Rocks up to six feet in diameter covered a 10 foot stretch of the road.Geotechnical engineers inspected the rock face Thursday and determined that conditions were safe for construction crews to clear debris and make repairs to the road.
“With safety inspections completed and the travel lane restored, we are happy to re-open the road this evening (Oct. 18) at 6:00 p.m.” said Acting Superintendent Todd Suess.
During the closure, traffic was detoured north on Highways 112 and 113.
Current road information is available by calling Olympic National Park’s information line at 360-565-3131 or online at nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/current-road-conditions.htm.
