Oakland Bay County Park
In 2005, the Capitol Land Trust and Mason County joined together to purchase 80 acres on Oakland Bay which has become what is now known as Oakland Bay County Park.
The primary reason for the acquisition was conservation because Melaney Creek meanders through the property, but the agreement with the Land Trust and County did allow for the development of a passive park at this site. In 2007 a park master plan was adopted and in 2010 the County received a federal Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to begin phase I of the site development. The master plan that was adopted recommended various types of passive recreation. Including hiking, environmental and historical interpretation, picnic opportunities, educational areas, wildlife viewing, and more. The first phase of development, which is what is being done now, includes walking trails, picnic areas, restrooms, signage, and other site amenities. The trail system is under development and shortly the restrooms and parking will be completed. When complete, Oakland Bay Park will be formally opened for the public to enjoy and there will be about 2.5 miles of various paths and trails for the public’s enjoyment.
