Updated information: A 23 year old Gig Harbor man escaped from a plane crash uninjured yesterday as his small plane traveling from Hoquiam to Bremerton lost power
in bad weather over western Mason County. The man, a student pilot, tried to set the plane down on the Shelton Matlock Road just east of the Matlock Store. During the landing the plane hit a road sign with a wing flipping the plane over. It came to rest on its back about 20 feet off of the roadway. The pilot was not injured. He told deputies he was a student pilot on a cross country solo flight. The man said the weather got bad fast and closed in. He said the engine lost power and he tried to land on the roadway. The cause of the engine failure has not yet been determined. NTSB will be investigating the incident. Washington State Patrol Troopers, Mason County Deputies, and Fire District 12 responded to the scene. The roadway was blocked for a short period of time and has since reopened.
